What does SEO mean?

SEO is the acronym for Search Engine Optimization. It is the method used to get your website listed high on the natural/organic search listings of search engines for the chosen keywords.

What does SEM mean?

SEM is the acronym for Search Engine Marketing. It is the method used to display advertisements on the search pages alongside the natural/organic search listings for the chosen keywords.  For e.g. on Google you would see these text based ads on the right hand side of the screen under “Sponsored Links”.

How do search engines find your website?

There are two ways that search engines find your website. The first if you can submit your website to them by submitting your URL (website address e.g. http://www.google.com). The second is that search engines usually have programs called spiders that crawl across the Internet looking for new websites that have been added.

Once the website is found the spider crawls through every link on your website and follows it through all the pages uploaded onto your website. The information of your website is then added to the database of the search engine. The search engine usually records the Title tag, META tags and content of your website. The search engine uses this information to match your website to the keywords entered by the user while searching for content.

How do you ensure that your website ranks higher on search results as compared to other websites?

You need to optimize your website for the keywords that you would like to have your website rank higher on search engines. In order to do this you have to see that the keyword is present in your URL, in the Title and META tags of your webpage and the number of times it is present in the content of your website.

For Google it also depends on how many websites have a link back to your website on them. The more number of websites that link back to your website the higher you would rank on Google search pages for the keyword.

These are the very basic things you would need to do to ensure that your website ranks higher on search engines. There are a number of other things also needed to ensure that you rank higher on search engines and also maintain your position there.
